Join us for the 96th Annual Conference!
The Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences (IASS) provides the opportunity to present professional papers and student posters in all areas and sub-areas of the social sciences. The 96th annual conference will be held on:
Saturday, October 4, 2025
at Hanover College in Hanover, IN
Professor Roberta Pergher
2025 Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences Keynote Speaker
2025 Hanover College Cornelius and Anna Cook O’Brien History Lecturer
Roberta Pergher, Associate Professor of History at IU Bloomington and Director of the Institute for European Studies, is an expert on the rise of fascism during the period between WWI and WWII. Her study, Mussolini's Nation-Empire: Sovereignty and Settlement in Italy's Borderlands, 1922-1943 (Cambridge University Press, 2018), asks how ordinary people made sense of, challenged, and rethought their place in society in the context of shifting state boundaries and collective identities. The focuses of her two recent co-edited volumes – In the Society of Fascists: Acclamation, Acquiescence and Agency in Mussolini’s Italy (with Giulia Albanese, Palgrave Macmillan, 2012) and Beyond Versailles: Sovereignty, Legitimacy, and the Formation of New Polities after the Great War (with Marcus Payk, Indiana University Press, 2019) – have clear parallels with the present day (including the question of coercion and consent in Fascist Italy) as does her forthcoming book from Cambridge UP on fascist imperialism, which focuses upon citizenship and the contract between the individual and the state.

The IASS Conference sessions and noon meal will take place in Hanover's beautiful Science Center (Building #13 on the Campus Map, B-6).
To access Hanover's campus from the east (Routes 62 and 56), ignore the campus entrance at Scenic Drive and instead continue on into Hanover and turn left at the traffic light (CVS Pharmacy, North Main Cross Street), go one block to the stop sign, and turn left again onto Main Street. This will take you directly to Hanover's campus. Veer to the right at the Y in the road when you come to the campus and continue until you have the Ohio River in view. Then park wherever space is available and walk to the nearby Science Center using the campus map posted here.
If you are traveling from the north, south, and/or west, take I-65 to Exit 29 (Scottsburg), travel east on Route 56 until you reach Hanover. Veer to the right at Jendy's Pizzeria and continue straight to Hanover's campus. Veer to the right at the Y in the road when you come to the campus and continue until you have the Ohio River in view. Then park where space is available and walk to the nearby Science Center using the campus map posted here.

No permits are required for visitors to park in Hanover College campus lots on Saturdays. Parking lots are available next to Classic Hall, behind Parker Auditorium, adjacent to the Science Center, and also behind the Duggan Library and Fine Arts Building (please see the campus map). Students have cars on campus and many park in the Science Center lot, but on weekends there are usually plenty of spaces to park in the other lots within reasonable distance (5-minute walk) of the Science Center. There are handicap spaces available in these parking lots, but if you need assistance here, please contact Michael Raley by email at raleyjm@hanover.edu. I will then share with you my cell phone number so that we can be in contact on the day of the conference.

Please click on the link below for a .pdf file listing area hotels and restaurants near the college. Most are located in nearby Madison, Indiana, and are from 2-7 miles from the campus (5-15 minutes by car). The Comfort Inn is the closest to the campus, but the Clifty Inn at the state park where several nice hiking trails are available is very nice and the Hillside Inn and the Fairfield Inn (the completely renovated historic Eagle Cotton Mill building, Madison's "newest" hotel) located downtown in historic Madison offer rooms with a view of the beautiful Ohio River. Others may be found along Route 62 (Clifty Drive) in north Madison.
